My Title: Be ABOUT God's Work

My Verse: 50

50 "for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke to them and said, 'Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid,'"

My Response:

I've never read this story from this perspective. Jesus' disciples were weary from ministry and they wanted rest. They are annoyed that Jesus wouldn't send the crowd home so they could all rest and eat. Instead, Jesus puts them to work and even tells them He expects THEM to feed the crowd. Their hearts are hard so they miss the lesson and what Jesus is doing completely. So, Jesus puts them in the boat alone, without Him. JUST LIKE THE PEOPLE WHO WERE LIKE SHEEP WITHOUT A SHEPHERD. THEY ARE NOW SHEEP WITHOUT A SHEPHERD. Jesus INTENDED to walk by them but when they cry out in fear He stops and has compassion on them too. We ALL need Jesus.

Jesus gets into the boat. The wind ceases. NOW they are astounded... their hearts were hardened because they didn't UNDERSTAND the loaves. - They didn't want to do the work to feed the 5000. They were tired and wanted rest. They thought they were going to get it. They were sassy about helping Jesus feed the 5000+ because their hearts are hard. < I love this actually. Mark is pointing out their bad attitude because of their circumstances and how Jesus doesn't just meet the needs of the 5000. He also meets the needs of his 12 closest friends... by dealing with their hearts.

How Will This Make You a Better Husband/Father/Man:

DEAL WITH THE HEART. Look past the anger, the pain, the frustration, the FEAR, and go directly to the heart. The source. Find out what really needs attention and apply the grace of God liberally!

Teach your family WHY you do it and HOW they can and should do it too.

My Notes:

  • REST - You can't expect to run on endlessly. Jesus knew when it was time to rest and when to teach His disciples to rest.

  • 5000 men (and their wives and maybe even children) were fed by Jesus dividing 5 loaves of bread and two fish.

  • The disciples are finally about to get some rest (much needed rest) and they get pulled into another ministry opportunity... BUT, Jesus saw His Father at work and joined Him in the work and the resulting miracle is mind blowing.

  • Immediately... no rest for the weary. So they are tired and need rest, and Jesus takes them to a place to show them HIS strength. - Then immediately puts them in a boat headed for a storm. Their tested when they are exhausted and the chips are stacked against them not when they are well rested and off the injury list. BE ON GUARD. EXPECT THE WAVES... Jesus will be walking on them.

  • Jesus prays.

  • Jesus SEES that they were making headway PAINFULLY. Decides to walk on water, but doesn't intend to head to the boat to comfort them... His intention was to WALK PAST THEM. < I am laugh crying right now. It's funny, BUT WHY DOES HE DO THAT!? I feel like the poor idiots in the boat with no faith complaining that Jesus isn't in the boat, even though I KNOW He saw this coming, and now I might die because God doesn't care about me when Jesus isn't in the boat. Also I'm hanging on for dear life and my hands hurt from holding on so tightly. Also, I gotta poop cause I didn't have time to go right before we left cause Jesus was telling us to leave immediately and this was SUPPOSED to be a short trip across the water. Does God even hear me when I pray? < That's accurate.

  • Jesus was going to walk by. This is melting my mind. - He doesn't come to the boat. He says "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid."

  • Mark doesn't record Peter walking on water or failing to keep his eyes on Jesus.

  • Jesus gets into the boat.

  • They get back on land and they are right back into ministry.
