My Title: Your Devotion is to the Lord

My Verse: 35

"35 I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord."

My Response:

They really believed that Christ could come back at any moment. It's been enough time now that we have LOST this perspective. How could we not though? - This makes sense, Paul's life makes sense in the context that the Lord could return at any moment. We need to GET THAT PERSPECTIVE.

God has GREAT purpose in marriage. It's spoken of here like a crutch and as a weakness because marriage is an investment in THIS life. You can't serve God with your entire heart when you are married because half of your heart no longer belongs to you. You become concerned with pleasing your spouse. You can't act as if God is the only thing that matters because if you get put in prison, that effects more than just you. You can't just up and leave the country on a whim without your family suffering your absence. Too many men have sacrificed their families and marriages on the alter of wanting to accomplish something for the Lord... that's just selfishness.

When you get married, your first ministry is your marriage and then your kids. All of your other actions for the Lord should flow out of that. Your marriage is a DESIGNED picture of the triune God. The love that is carried out in submission to each other functioning in the roles that God DESIGNED for us when He created mankind in HIS OWN IMAGE is a testimony to the world. That doesn't mean He wont call you to a role that lands you in prison or even call for you to lay down your life because of your faith but if your family is your first ministry they will see that it the result of your circumstance are flowing out of God's plan for your family.

How Will This Make You a Better Husband/Father:

Live as you are called, "17 Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him." - God HAS a plan for your life. He has a plan for your wife's life. He's got a plan for EACH of your kid's lives! One of the BIGGEST parts of His plan for you is Heather. Not only is she seriously a flat out miracle in your life bro, leading her, serving her and living with her in an understanding way is what is going to make you most like Christ my man. She is God's biggest tool in your life. Love her. Cherish her. Also, ENJOY her, all of her. In fact go tell her right now how much of a blessing she is. - BUT most importantly, don't let your biggest blessing distract you from YOUR GOD. Listen to His voice. You can't lead without direction and you get your direction from Him. You can't love selflessly unless you're letting Him work in and through you to do so. Lead by the way you live, you've got a son and two daughters that are shaping their world view by watching you. Serve God. Love God. Live for Him. If you do that, serving your family will come naturally.

My Notes:

  • Why would it be better not to have sexual relations with a woman? When you get married, your life is no longer truly your own. You can't just up and leave on a missionary journey without your loved ones suffering. You can't get your head chopped off for the gospel without your kids being left without a father. - By getting married SO THAT you can have things in this life like love and passion and fatherhood means you are investing in THIS life.

  • It IS good to be married to one wife and with that means that the other person has RIGHTS over your body. Man over the woman's and the woman over the man's.

  • Don't deprive one another or you open the opportunity for temptation!

  • It is better to marry than to burn with passion. In marriage you HAVE FREEDOM.

  • Husband and wife should not divorce.

  • The aim should be salvation. If an unbeliever will stay with a believer than stay married. Your changed life and heart could win your spouse to the Lord.

  • Don't be distracted. Your focus and your aim is God and His call.
